I know the FCC has regulaions in place for stations to have a digital signal but are there any regulations for having to broadcast in HD?
The reason I ask is that my local NBC station has a digital signal but does not have the equipment to broadcast in HD. I have called and e-mailed and they say that due to the high expense they have no plans on broadcasting in HD.
I guess I'm hoping there is something in place that would force them to join the 20th century and their local cometitors in the HD world.

We had the same problem with the CBS affiliate KPHO in Phoenix. As far as I know we have no real recourse except to boycott their station. Get as many people as you can to complain the station or NBC.
Luckily for us here, KPHO announced they will start HD this year.
Good Luck!

When did KPHO announce that ? That's great.

Anyone who doesn't have HD in a few years is also going to lose a lot of customers to channels or service providers that do have HD. Once you see HD or have that option, SD simply "won't do".

The regs do only state a digital requirement. The FCC makes no requirement that a digital station also broadcast in HD.

And apparently the regs say nothing about broadcasting a digital signal with enough power to be reached outside of the station's parking lot..."Hey honey I'm finally getting 'Meet The Press' in HD! Just don't run the microwave for the next hour, OK?"

Actually the regs do talk about how much coverage the signals have to provide. Right now a lot of stations have waivers that allow them to broadcast at reduced power. Presumably they will eventually have to raise their power level in the next couple years.

Then maybe my neighbors will start talking to me again, after I take down the 100' tower in the front yard.
