I have a Mitsubishi 55511 projection tv & have considered upgrading the two factory speakers. Would this cause problems with the crt's?

Welcome to the forum. If you were to install speakers with larger magnets this could cause problems.
Most TVs have connections on the back for extension speakers. If your TV has these, you could buy some extension speakers and use them instead...?
edit - downloaded the set's pdf and didn't see any speaker connections on the back panel - interesting - in that case - don't know what to suggest. The speakers seem to be a fair size and the amp is probably designed for them in mind...
I guess you could consider a Home Theater in a box (HTIB) or a receiver with speakers? I assume your question about the internal speakers was because you didn't want this...
