Got a 55859 in St. Louis. I am operating strictly from an off the air antenna. In the HD mode I experience random dropouts of signal that usually lasts for a short duration. It's kinda like the receiver drops one or more packets. I think it may be signal strength situation in that as the antenna is rotated away from the xmitting antenna the situation will get worse. However, after watching an hour or so with no dropouts one or two will suddenly occur. Mitsubishi says it is an antenna problem but I am beginning to doubt it. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you resolve it?

I have the Ws-55859 and it has the same tinny sound. It's only happening on the OTA tunner that is built in the tv.
Has anyone heard the tinny sound coming from a STB?

Has anyone heard the tinny sound coming from a STB? I'm having the tinny sound also and always on the right channel. Sometimes switching channels will stop it, sometimes not. Always the old power off then power on will eliminate it - until I do a channel change. My only signal source is OTA so it sounds like I have the same problem. Any feedback from MITS?

I have not attempted to contact Mits.
Before i bought the Mits, I had purchased a RCA 61310 (returned it within 30 days) with the same indoor powered antenna and did not have any "Dropouts" or "Tinney" sound problems, so the Mits reply about the antenna being the problem sounds like fluff.
I plan on purchasing a STB in the near future, to resolve the problem. BB has the Hughes E86 (OTA and DTV) for $470.
Good luck!

Had local service tech out today and demonstrated both the tinny right speaker sound and the signal dropouts. He called MIts and was told that it was probobly a low signal strength problems (never mind that I am less than five miles from the most distant HV transmitter in ST. Louis) and suggested an amplifier then hung up. I produced a 20 db UHF inline amplifier and we inserted it into the transmission line from the antenna. Both problems remained. The tech called Mits back and after some consultations on their end the decided to change out the tuner. Will keep you updated when it gets here.

Yes, please keep us informed on the progress of the repair.
How many others are having this problem? from the number of replies it does not seem like there are too many.

Jimbo,
I am also from St. Louis and just got the 55859. I only use a receiver for audio and have no problems. I very rarely have picture dropouts, perhaps your just in a bad location.
The CBS HD broadcasts are tremendous, however ABC's 720p broadcasts are not very good at all. What have you thought?
I was at ultimate electronics today at brentwood looking hd directv receivers. Anybody have any suggestions.

We receive HDABC via cable and their upconverted programmes (4:3 aspect ratio) are really lousy here too (confirmed by others in Toronto). The actual HD material (16:9 - James Bond movies for example) have been quite good, so perhaps they have problems with their upconversion of standard NTSC stuff.

Local Mits service rep replaced the tuner (digital module) yesterday with seemingly good results. The tinny sound is completely gone and the dropouts, while not totally absent are few and far between. I think things are looking up.
Since there is a 60 degree angle between the eastern most and westernmost transmitters at my location I think I will probably have to rig some sort of antenna in the attic to avoid having to adjust an antenna rotater everytime I change a channel. Maybe I can defer climbing up there until it cools off in the fall.
Bottem line is that the new tuner cleared up the major problems.
Does anyone have any info pertaining to vertical and horizontal adjustment procedures? Specifically I am looking for the meanings of the cryptic abbreviations they use in the JUNGLE menu.

I concur with your evaluation of the CBS and the ABC pricure quality. I think also that NBC has a very good picture.
I am in south county near St. Anthony's Medical Center. With my replacemt tuner I am convinced that the droupouts I encounter are due to the fact that I am getting FOX and CBS off of the edges of my antenna's response angle. Will probably have to play some antenna games to get rid of all of them.
Hope you have good luck with your 55859. We are enjoying ours.

About five days after replacing the digital tuner on the WS-55859 the original problems resurfaced! Local service tech attempted to call Mits on July 5th only to discover that the factory was closed for the long weekend. Will the fun never end?

Jimbo,
Sorry to hear about the new tuner. Any further information from Mits?
Good luck
