There is one connection that the Industry continues to bypass, however professional Studios and Theaters have not missed. It's called SDI. It's essentially a coaxial digital cable that carries a 50MHz bandwidth signal and digital audio up to 500 feet. It's only found on $100K projectors and $50K processors, but it's better that DVI or Firewire and provides the same results. For the consumer, it's in mass quantity. In fact, an SDI board only costs $250. Imagine, One cable to each component in the chain. It also works in a pass-through digital controlled environment. It also provides HDCP. The ultimate solution for multiroom audio and video with a centralized rack. Maybe they will listen some day. :D

SDI in studios makes sense. The signal is uncompressed as they work on it and transfer it from point to point. SDI on a TV makes as much sense as DVI. So why switch to SDI when DVI is already starting to take off? Switching formats now will only set the industry back another 5 years.

How is SDI better than DVI? Dual link DVI has more bandwidth than SDI will ever have. DVI aslo has a copy protection scheme in place (HDCP), which you need if you ever want the studios to crank out HD. DVI also has EDID, which tells the transmitter how to format the video. SDI has none of this.
