Is it possible to get DVDs of music videos? If so, what kind of picture and sound quality do they have?

Thanks

There are lots of DVDs of music videos. They are about the only DVDs that I buy because I enjoy watching them over and over, unlike movies - personal preference).

DVD videos are not "DVD Audio" that's something different, but they are digital sound and some of them are DD5.1 (typically remixed for DD5.1)

Most of them are 4:3. Quality depends on the production values that went into them in the first place. Some are first rate, but some (especially older videos from they 1980's) can be very grainy, out of focus, etc.

I like to buy the "Best of" videos, so I have:

Barenaked Ladies - Barelaked Nadies DD5.1.
Shania Twain - Platinum
Fleetwood Mac - The Dance DD5.1
Brooooooce - (Videos - two disc set) (DD5.1)
Sarah MacLaughlan - Best of...
The Doors - Collection
Blondie - Live 1999 (DD5.1)
Billy Joel - Greatest.
Cranberries - Stars
Coors - Best of (some DD5.1)

Since these are relatively cheap - not much more than CDs I think they're great value.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did a bit of browsing at amazon.com (wimpy search engine - "Music Videos" in DVDs turns up 426 hits, while "Rock Music" turns up over 1300) and while in the local 'City. Most of what I found seem to be live concert footage which I'm sure is OK if that's what you're into.

I guess what I'm really looking for are collections of the videos that are shown on MTV, VH1, etc. "Now That's What I Call Music Videos on DVD Volume 29" ya know?

BTW any way to digitally rip the audio?

"Appalacian Journey Live In Concert" on Sony Classical (5.1 DD, 4:3, 95 minutes)

Fiddler Mark O'Conner, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and bassist Edgar Meyer present traditional American music and their own compositions in this tradition in a concert from Avery Fisher Hall. If you are at all a fan of American folk music this DVD is a winner.

PQ is just OK but the sound quality and musicianship are outstanding. You just can't fake it with acoustic instruments. Meyer has taken his upright bass and lengthened the lowest string by about 10" - providing the ultimate subwoofer test. With none of the muddiness of an electric bass, you're hearing pure vibrations at extremely low frequencies.

An added bonus is cameo appearances by two of my favorite vocalists, Alison Krause (singing Steven Foster's "Slumber My Darling") and James Taylor, also singing a Foster title, "Hard Times Come Again No More."

Granted it's a far cry from the highly regarded rock concerts many of you suggested, but if you're inclined towards the "unplugged," you can't go wrong with this DVD.

I'll mention it again since it's my favorite DVD (of the music variety) to date:

Eric Clapton: One More Car, One More Driver - 2001 Live Tour

The entire concert on DVD, each track is DD 5.1/DTS.
It looks to have been digitally recorded, as the aspect ratio is either 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 and I can't see a bit of film grain or dust/speckles.

Buy it, it's only $14.99!

Check out the new Faith Hill DVD. It is anamorphic 1.85:1 and is in DD5.1. Sound and PQ are excellent - and she has never looked better- if you know what I mean!!

I was browsing the Music DVD section yesterday and noticed several DVDs that were Widescreen and DD5.1. A good sign of things to come...

I believe they were "concert" DVDs which were probably shot widescreen.

My favorites have to be:

Fleetwood Mac - The Dance (side A DD5.1, side B PCM stereo)

John Fogerty - Premonition (DD5.1 and PCM stereo selected from the menu. On my system it defaults to PCM, have to switch each time I listen to it)

Alabama - For the Record - Live 41 #1 Hits (DD5.1/2.0)

All 4:3 and mastered for DD5.1.
