changing resolution

A friend has a 65' HDTV. He wants to change the resolution. He posted this on a computer forum I use. :

I am hooking a Computer to a Mitsubishi Platinum Plus 65" 16:9 HDTV. I was told to use a program called Powerstrip 3.15. My problem is that with that program I can only get it to run at 640x480. That program is supposed to allow you to run at higher resolution. Yet everytime I try higher resolutions (even at the 60Hz refresh rate that the TV runs at) it gets all fussy and blurred.
Does anybody know of any other programs that allow you to change resolutions of HDTV's

I think the problem might be that he is using the VGA connection. It has a maximum resolution of 640x480. He may try to use a VGA to component breakout cable to take advantage of the component input of his tv.
