I just got a Samsung 27" HDMONITOR last week and I picked up my HD cable Pioneer BOX.

All looks fine except ESPNHD.The image looks SQUEEZEED I guess is the best way to describe it.

My cable box is setup what kind of TV I checked 4:3 the the next setting is choose how to display a widescreen 16:9 braodcast.I choose Letterbox 16:9 only other are zoom 16:9 and squeeze 16:9.
None of those look good on the other channels and you can save a setting per channel.
Now the non real HD ESPN signale is letterboxed.

Now one thing I have not had a true HD signal from ESPNHD yet the next one will be 8:30 tonite nba game.Is there a chance the widescreen HD signal they send tonite MAY not be sqeezed so much?

When I say squeezed meaning that a persons height seems squashed down some what ,now lettering or writing on a wall seems ok.

Thanks for any input hope it is better hd game feed/

If your TV has "vertical compression" technology, which some do, you may actually have to set your cable box to 16:9 and invoke the vertical compression feature for true HD programmes to show them properly. I know this is counter intuitive, but that's how some HDTVs work. Read the manual for the TV if it has vertical compression. You'll also have to read the manual for the cable box so that the two components "mesh" properly.

The same will hold true for your DVD player, set it to 16:9 and invoke vertical compression. This will properly display anamorphic (enhanced for widescreen) DVDs. You won't need to invoke vertical compression for "standard" DVDs.

I just talked to my rep at Sigecom(my cable provider) and they now have 23 of us HDTV BETA TESTERS out.

All of us are having the squashed ESPNHD look on NON HD signals.

All have tried all settings on Pioneer box and we have a mixer of WIDESCREN sets and 4.3 sets.So this must be in the signal sigecom is getting.

So and I am sorry I forget is anyone getting ESPNHD from Dirrect or Dish yet?

Now when ESPNHD goes to a real HD signal it is fine.

Oh the image is what I called squashed .
EVEN on a 16.9 set
