View Full Version : UHF antenna preamp?

I have a Delhi UHF Yagi corner reflector antenna on a roof-mount. I live in Ventura, CA, approximately 40-45 miles from the broadcast towers on Mt. Wilson in LA. I get KCET digital at a signal strength (SS) of 80-85 and the picture is usually solid. CBS, ABC, and NBC (all digital stations) are all variable with SS readings 60-75 and infrequent pixelation/freezes/dropouts. Fox digital is the worst with SS rarely above 65 and lots of dropouts and freezes. Unfortunately Fox is the station that my kids most like to watch, and I do enjoy watching "24" in 480P widescreen on Tuesdays, but it is usually a very frustrating experience with all the audio/video dropouts. Will an antenna preamp help with my situation? If so, which is the best and how should it be installed? The antenna is connnected to my digital STB (Dish 6000) by approx 100 feet of coax cable. I'm not sure what grade the cable is, but I could find out if it is important to finding a solution. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

I bet it would help. I don't have your set-up, but I have found that using a pre-amp with my rabbit-ears provides a big boost of the digital signal for me.

Zarlor, what brand of pre-amp do you have? How much did it cost and where did you buy it? Thanks again!

I'm not at home, so I'm not sure, but in my case it's built-into the rabbit ears. Some cheapo set I bought from Radio Shack for maybe $20. They also sell in-line amps there, and I need to get one for my Mother (who lives about 40 miles from the broadcaster and has her antenna in the attic, insted of outside, which provides a good deal of interference for her.) If I remember correctly they were around $15-$20, with a part you plug in the line at the antenna connection and the other end you plug into the wall as well as into the line at the connection point on your reciever. I figure even if something like that doesn't work for you, you can always take it back for a refund.
