I've had my Denon receiver for about a year and a half and have had no problems until recently. The surround sound worked great with tv, dvd etc. but now I'm only getting sound out of the two left surround speakers when watching TV, nothing out of the center, two rights or sub and I get no sound when playing a dvd. Nothing that I know of has been changed, unless the wife changed something without my knowing. I know this isn't too much info to go on, but just thought I'd try. My system is plugged into a cheap surge protector, could a thunder storm have blown something only in the receiver and not any other componants plugged into the strip? Fuses in the receiver blown somehow? I don't know. Or did the wiring or system setup get messed up somehow that I'll have to figure out?

Any suggestions, other that not allowing the wife downstairs close the tv, would be great!

It is a good idea to disconnect wiring (component and speaker), clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol or something similar and reconnect the wires about once a year or so. If after you do this you still have problems, then you can look for faults within the receiver.

Suggest you reconnect one component at a time to determine if one of them can be the cause.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with isopropyl alcohol. Where would I get that or something similar? Thanks for the help.

Please excuse mine, I should have said rubbing alcohol, but being an engineer....

Forgot to mention that a Q-tip is probably the best tool to use to apply the alcohol around the contacts and inside the little holes. (don't go too far in).

I cleaned all the connectors to components and speakers to no avail. I've been playing with the system setup on the receiver and whether I changed it to or back to I'm not sure, but set it up so both the DVD and TV are set up for digital audio input. (I don't if I mentioned this but I do have satellite tv which is digital audio I beleive? Also I do have a monster optical cable going to the receiver.) With the receiever set with the digital input I get no sound for either the dvd or tv. If I change the receiver to analog I get sound out of just the left speakers for both again.

Could the monster optical cable be bad?

I find it odd that you only get the left channels when you connect via the analogue cables (did you try reversing the cable so that the right is left and left is right to see if you still only get sound from the left?).

The optical cable could certainly be broken. You could take it to a store and try it or buy another and take it back if it doesn't solve the problem (but that would be my last resort).

Does the "speaker test" work properly - sound (white noise) out of all the speakers.

Have you tried the receiver's internal tuner - AM Radio for example to see if you get "hiss" or a station out of all the channels?

Also try switching between "stereo" and Dolby pro-logic to see if there is a difference or if you still only get the left channel(s).

Check and make sure step by step everything is set up right, one wrong setting or button could be the culprit, make sure your TV and DVD are sending a digital signal, my DVD player has a setting for this. If you are sure everything is set up right try something easy like 2 channel stereo to see if you have sound, 2ch stereo is an easy setup, speakers, one set of RCA's to a CD etc. If you still only get no sound or sound out of one channel and you are absolutely positive (I have a 2802 and there are a hell of a lot of settings you can mess up) everything is setup right then it might be something wrong with your AVR. Do Denon's have fuses? If so it could be as simple as a blown fuse.

I tried to test tone, which can only be done on dolby digital, and nothing happened.

On "stereo" is when I can only get sound out of the left speakers, when I switch to dolby digital I get no sound.

I'll try listening to the AM tuner and see what happens.

Thanks for working with me on this.

Follow the instructions in the book to "delete" all settings, if your wife changed something delete all the settings and set everything up from scratch again.
