View Full Version : Denon AVR 3300 DTS-ES/Dolby D-EX decoder recommendations
Hello All:
I have enjoyed the use of my Denon AVR 3300 receiver for the past few years but now that I have the home theater setup & tweaked the way I like it I am looking at adding the DTS-ES & DolbyD-EX capability to my setup. unfortunately this receiver came in before these two formats were around, ...so I am looking for suggestions on an add-on external decoder upgrade if around and at a reasonable cost that I can add to this receiver before going the upgrade route. Any hep is greatly appreciated
Thanks,

Welcome to the forum. You may wish to hear the exact difference between DD5.1 and DD6.1 Matrix, as well as DTS and DTS-ES before you spend the money. Find somewhere that has a setup and disconnect the rear center speaker.
Next, you should realize that there is not that much "6.1" material available.
Thirdly, I added "6.1" to my setup because my receiver was capable of doing so, but there is not a huge difference from that one extra speaker.
I'm not trying to discourage you from doing so, just making you aware of a few things before you spend a bunch of money and are disappointed in the results.
The problem is to go from DD or DTS 5.1 to ES/EX 6.1 or 7.1 you not only need decoding, you will need amplification for the other 1 or 2 speakers.
Someone else may have a better answer but the cheapest way I know to accomplish both is buy a receiver with the capability built in.

I find 6.1 an improvement over 5.1 and my AVR will take 5.1 and play it in 6.1 spreading the rear signal over the 3 rear speakers in either matrix or non matrix.
Elay I believe your Denon does have the 8 Channel External Inputs, they put those there so you could still use your AVR when new formats came out. You would need a decoder or a DVD player with seperate channel outs that does the decoding and then you would need a seperate amp to plug into the pre out for the sixth channel on the AVR.
If you go here:
http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1&c=57
and look up AVR-3300 you can see the specs and the manual in case you don't have it anymore.
Thanks to all who replied on this....It looks like I do have the inputs for a decoder and will look to see what is available to hookup...Have a good weekend
