Autos, airplanes, wind moving leaves on trees, and changing atmospheric conditions can all make multipath problems fluctuate, sometimes wildly.

Until new receivers come out with chips that ignore multipath, you'll need to use a good directional antenna, installed outdoors and as high as possible.

There is no 8-VSB dynamic multipath solution in the works that I know about. 2-VSB was demonstrated at this years NAB but it was not a successful demonstration and was not directed at the US market because it would be incompatible with current receivers. There are however many DTV receive chips that easily handle multipath both dynamic and static and even benefit from it. They come in receivers that cost as little as $65 and are as small as half a pack of cigarettes. They do HDTV and SDTV and data and they work with simple antennas. Fortunatley for you the FCC has protected you from them and will require you to buy a more expensive receiver that does not work in dynamic multipath environments.

Tolerated? In a sense...

It seems that the AVSForum is also part of the conspiracy!

I am not a believer in conspiracy theories usually. It is more like they don't want to upset some of their supporters maybe. In the case of the AVSFORUM that would be members of the Consumers Electronic Association (CEA).

The pressure these manufacturers can bring is enormous. For example the DVB Group in Europe would not support me in pushing for COFDM back in 1999 and 2000 because many of their member are also members of the CEA. So even though their reason for existence is to foster COFDM DVB-T they would not openly support any effort on its behalf in the US.

This was also true of most RF manufacturers and broadcasters. The broadcasters were intimidated by the politicians who were paid off by the CEA members again. The politicians openly threatended the broadcasters with loss of their spectrum. I always came back to the CEA, the NAB and the Congresspersons they supported.

If cost people I know their jobs for supporting COFDM.
