It would be a series of fuzzy images projected from small black-and-white screens, but that was enough to entice thousands of Canadians to rush out and buy their first televisions to watch the Queen's coronation 50 years ago today.

Here's a very different scene from 50 years ago -

I had my first experience with color TV when RCA shipped one of the first such sets produced to the dealer I worked for in Oceanside, Calif. A couple of days later, a tech arrived from RCA headquarters in Los Angeles to "setup" the set. It took him roughly 9 hours (with sweat pouring from his brow) to get it close to what it was supposed to be!

As it turned out, RCA was overly optimistic about their design - it wasn't really "ready for prime time" and was summarily withdrawn from the marketplace - not to be re-introduced for another 5 years.
