What do you folks do in terms of furniture for your audio, STB's, and other various components?

It used to be that you just bought an entertainment center that would fit your TV, and you had openings and shelves and cubbies of all sorts for your components. Since these HDTVs are so large, most of which are free-standing, what do you do with those audio components?

I wouldn't want put the TV on TOP of something, as the top of the screen is already approaching shoulder level on my 5' 10" frame. Is there anything stylish that doesn't cost many hundreds (potentially thousands) of dollars?

Currently, I have my TV near a window, and the sill is deep enough for all my components to rest on. I think someone modified the window a bit so they could decorate it with plants and such. It's actually about a foot deep - very convenient - but I will not be having my equipment setup this way permanently. I usually rearrange furniture about every 4-6 months on average (thank GOD for casters on the TV).

I've searched by countless keywords, and all I'm finding are hugely extravagant entertainment centers made of all kinds of exotic materials, when all I need really is some kind of free-standing rack/shelving unit. Again, style is a concern, or I would have already made a trip to my local hardware store for 1x4's, plywood, and Fleckstone. :)

Check out Sanus. May not be what you consider to be affordable, but nice stuff:

I got an open box audio rack made by Tech-Craft at Ultimate Electronics. It is a nice unit.

My first RPTV entertainment center (for a 50" Mits many many years ago) was composed of two unfinished audio racks on either side and a flat plank of wood extending across the top for the center speaker and various stuff. Total cost $250 for materials and $30 for stain and polyurethane. It looked really good and I sold it for $220 more than I spent building it.

The rack that replaced it was a white laquer entertainment center that was designed for RPTVs with an elaborate bridge across the top and hidden speaker cabinets on either side. I found it at an ArtVan clearance center for $169. I still have it in the basement.

So... either do it yourself and save tons of cash, or cruise the outlet centers. You're bound to find something.

Good Luck!

As Swede I have to tell you to find an Ikea close by and check out the stuff - if they don't have the unit then every IKEA around the world serves good swedish meatballs with a special swedish jam - and the swedish chocolate is outstanding :)
