In answering a question like this, I would take a page out of 57U's book and refer you to the FAQ section "If Only I'd Have Known."
I admittingly know nothing about the Samsung monitor you are considering but am familiar with the SWX. But assuming you have access to the internet, I couldn't tell you any more about the tv than you likrly already know about.
My honest answer would be to make sure you have decided on the amount you want to spend and the size you want to view. Have a good understanding of what the TV is going to be primarily used for (HDTV, Movies, Gaming, etc.), and form some opinions using others experience (such as this message board) in addition to your own opinions.
From what I have seen, very little documented reliability information exists for HDTV models, and for leading technology, it simply doesn't exist. Consumer Reports magazine recommends comparing similar product reliability as a measuring stick (the rational being Sony makes top-notch SDTV, so they must make top-notch HDTV).
Although Sony make some excellent direct view TVs, they have not exactly excelled at CRT-based RPTVs. Here are the latest numbers from Consumers reports for RPTV reliability. Sorry Sammy's not on it.
Consumers Reports, March 2003, Reliability Numbers – indicating % of sets with significant problems or repairs required – lower numbers are better.
Hitachi - 6%
Mits - 7%
Sony - 8%
Toshiba - 10%.
The two sets you're asking about are in different "categories". One is a CRT-based RPTV, the other is a DLP. Difficult to compare.
