Only now are we seing the price drop. Two years ago the STB minimum price was $999. A year ago the STB minimum price was $699. Now it is $349.
Just my opinion.

It was never resolved. Sinclair pointed out that 8-VSB was not working as advertised. Test were done. Sinclair was more than proved right. The test stated that 8-VSB receivers were woefully inadequate and did not meet minimum standards. The manufacturers went on a fast track to fix the problem. They are still working on it.
If Sinclair had not made a stink about the problem you would be even farther from any solution since the manufaturers were adamant that there was no problem. I remember press releases in 1999 from Motorola and NextWave that declared that they had solved the problems of multipath and easy indoor and mobile reception.
Sinclair did us a favor. The CEA, FCC, NAB, MSTV, Zenith and Motorola told us lies and promoted false test. They are the ones who are respondsible for the delays or I should say stagnation that is the OTA DTV transition.
Even today the CEA plays games that delay. The CEA says that basically OTA DTV is a non issue. That most people get TV from satellite and Cable and that is good enough. The went further and declared that most people did not want to put up antennas on their homes. This was in answer to the mandate from the FCC to include tuners in all TV sets.
