New to this!!!! I have a 65in. MITSUBISHI,The HD 500 IRD. I live about 20 miles west of the chicago downtown area,On a clear nite I can see the top of sears tower from my roof, My antenna is up another 10 feet above that! But i still have a problem with CBS. There HD signal is broadcast on chnl. 3 not UHF. I have no problems with any other channels they all come BOOMING in on the built in signal strength meter ,But for some reason CBS signal bounces up and down from 30 to 95, what gives I'm lost as to what to do The HD picture is great then it breaks up and comes back. All my favorie show are on CBS.Anyone have any ideas as to what i can try?

I am having a somewhat similiar problem. All the HDTV antennas are located in the same place outside Houston, and all use UHF (except one, which is the PBS feed, and which is received perfectly). My problem is the local NBC station which broadcasts at a much higher power. If I use a smaller antenna and use automatic channel selection NBC works great, everything else is junk ; if I use the in attic antenna the reverse is true.
June 1 Update: My dealer upgraded us from Mits HD4 to HD5. I don't seem to be having problems now. But, as this is the 5th tuner, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Denny,
You didn't mention what type of antenna you are using. Obviously you will need a VHF/UHF antenna to get all the stations.
If you do have the right antenna, you may be 'overdriving' the tuner (signal too strong). Go to Radio Shack and purchase a variable 'attenuator' ( http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F002%5F002%5F008%5F001&product%5Fid=15%2D678 ) If it doesn't work, they have a good return policy.
Install this inline, tune to channel 3 (bring up the signal meter) and slowly start to move the attenuator dial. Hopefully (if my SWAG is correct), you should hit the 'magic setting' that will keep your VHF signal stable.

cbs hd is transmitted from the hancock and not the sears..and right now its only being transmitted at 2/3 power.

Even though the station is only at 2/3 power, he should still get a solid signal, not one that drastically fluctuates. I would think that if low power were the only problem, the meter would be at a contant low value. Especially since the meter does go to 95 at times.
I still think that the trouble MAY either be, too strong of a signal or a multipath problem.

I live in downtown Chicago but CBS 2 does not come in, why is that?
DTV suffers from multi-path that is strong downtown and to the northwest. Try moving your antenna around.

Raise your antenna about 1,127 feet and you can probably get 100% !! :D
