so i got my TXN3298 today to replace the TXM model, wheich was not working right. this TV seemed GREAT...and then i put in 1080i mode. the sides of the screen look warped, like the indentations of an hourglass on each side. stright lines look bent in and out in a reverse S pattern. NOT DRASTIC, but definitely obvious. these ARE High Def channels. viewed through interlacing outputs there's no distortion. i don't want to call samsung just yet `cause they gave me a new tv without a hassle. don't want to make them madder (is that a word? how about more mad?). i know how to access the service menu but i'm not sure what i should adjust. any ideas?
A lot of sets have some amount of "pincushion". You need to go into the convergence menu and straighten out the lines, preferably with a grid pattern overlay, so that you do it right.
The word is angrier (mad refers to the insane, angry is the approriate word, but many don't use it.)

well then, mad IS the correct term `cause i am insane!!!!
thanks for the advice. i'll try out the convergence menu. not sure what that overlay thing is you speak of, but i assume it's some guide to make sure the lines are straight. i'll F' with it after the hockey game. thanks, once again, for the advice.
man, you should get paid for this stuff.

why can't the menu just say "convergence"??
i'm pushing it here, but does anybody know of any websites that explain what these abbreviations mean in the service menu? a shiny donkey to the person who doth provide.

When I did the adjustments I had the grid up. I used the grid from the DVD Video Essentials and I performed my stuff 1 step at a time. Write down the original settings if you can't remember them. My sam had the same problems and I really didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it. So I came to this site and found the service menu codes. I had a Sony wega which had the same problems but not as extreme. I tweaked both and now the picture is perfect.

or different. i called samsung and i think they are gonna put a hit out on me. i noticed that the screen bend moves as there is motion on the screen. so if something moves through the horizontal plane between the two bends, the screen "flexes". if samsung doesn't have me snuffed out, i hope they can help me fix it.

Looks like its ISF time. I assume your speakers are magnetically shielded?

ok, i found a grid overlay on my avia setup disk. it was ALL out of whack. it looked like in "weird science" when they were making the girls' boobs. anyway. i had to adjust a setting called "H EW" way down, and then some minor adjustments to make the screen full. i'd say it is about 98% perfect now. took 2 hours, lots of F'ing around, but me thinks i got it! thanks both of you. (strangley, the pic looks fine, but the STB menu looks bent. who cares though, i don't watch that". so now i'm sure you'll both sleep easier ;)
thanks again, seriously. after trying for 6 months to get the old one fixed or replaced, the last thing i wanted was MORE trouble on the new one.

The menu should be straight if the grid is straight. Keep playing around with it and make sure the TV is good and warm before making changes. It took me a good 3 days of tweaking and nit picking till I got it just right. What sucks though is I get everything just right and I accidently hit the reset button on the service menu and have to start over.
