Your TV does not decode surround sound, so most people buy an A/V receiver, plus a "5.1" speaker system. Some may consider a "home theatre in a box" (HTiB), but there's usually less performance with those.

A "Cheap system" would cost about $500 - $700.

A "half decent" system can be had for $1000 - $1500.

Some people spend many thousands of $ on their HT audio systems.

Many people who have "home theatres" feel that the audio portion of the experience is almost half (or more than half) of the overall experience. They therefore spend as much on their audio (Receiver & Speakers) as on their video (HDTV)

This is in Canadian?
A good inexepensive system is available in the States for 500-700
and a really good system for 1000 to 1500, Cheap an adequate can be found for less of you are really on a budget.

Anyway, between the two of us, he has an idea of what needs to be spent.
