I just purchased an 'open item' HDTV from Best Buy today. It is a Panasonic PT-53WX42 and I talked the manager down to $999.99 on it and free delivery. Of course it is missing a manual and a remote and has a few scratches and dings on it. The screen is fine and it is hard to tell of any damage. Do you think I got a good deal on this? And I also purchased the 4 year Best Buy service plan on it which cost me 300 bucks. Knowing that it is an open item, should I go ahead and keep the service plan or just 'wing it' with the one year manufacturers warranty? Any help will be appreciated.

Check out this link at epinions.com (http://www.epinions.com/) Paste PT-53WX42 and search 'All Categories' or 'Electronics'. When the result comes up click on 'Compare Prices' for the prices and reviews.

For some reason I'm not finding the threads where extended warranties were discussed. Maybe 57U or Kevinw can find them. Lots of discussion, pro and con, on buying extended warranties. Personally I don't. My opinion is, with electronics, problems will normally show themselves during the normal warranty and usually right away. (edit: I should add, I repair my own equipment when I can)

Thanks for the response. I did read the thread about extended warranties. The issues is, if I bought the item new and in mint condition I would not buy the warranty. I bought this item as an 'open item' and there are small damages to it. It leads me to wonder if other issues could arrise. I just wanted some opinions on the matter of spending 300 dollars to protect an uncertain investment.

I have the same TV that you have. I bought it in Nov 02 at BB. I talked the manager down to $1460 brand new.

From what you said you have paid $1300 for open item with warranty. If you want to get a new set for that price without extended warranty, I think you can talk the manager into it.

Panasonics have been very reliable, mine had no problems whatsoever.
And one more thing to make sure is that its not a floor display item. If it is then it might have gone through lot of abuse. May be even burnt in images. I would make sure that it doesnt have burnt in images.
Personally, I would not buy floor model.
