Do I need a digital receiver to play 480 p DVD videos from my progressive scan dvd player? And also if not more importantly will my xbox play 480 p without a digital receiver? If so will it do 720p and 1080i from the xbox also. My Xbox supports 480p 720p 1080i just not sure if I need a digital receiver.
Please Help
Audio and video signals are totally separate. There is no "receiver" issue in the "Video" portion of the signal...
Commercial movie DVDs are 480i, not 480P. Progressive scan DVD players deinterlace 480i to 480P. I don't think that game consoles deinterlace so they output movies in 480i. Games are totally different.
You can send the video signals directly to the TV or through a receiver that has component video switching.
If you send HD signals through a receiver, that receiver should have "wideband" or "HD" component video switching capability, which up until recently was pretty rare.
