hello,

I bought the 4215W. It was the last one costco had left so was on sale as an open box buy. The picture looked fine in the store, but as soon as i plugged it in at home and the blue screen came on i could see a bar across the lower portion of the screen. Then i realized i could read CNN Headline News on the bar. I tried with various inputs and with any light background the bar and CNN are clearly visible. I paid $899, so if i return it to costco it looks like i'll pay more elsewhere for a similar model. Is burn in something that the warranty will take care of? and how much of a hassle is warranty repair?

thanks

i called samsung and they don't cover burn in. is that denial of warranty coverage standard in the industry or specific to samsung? they advised me to return it to the store. i already rushed to return the uhaul before i found this problem so i think i'll plug in the ps2 and use it as a gaming tv for a couple weeks before hauling it back to the store. hopefully i'll find a good deal on a better set before football season.

It's too bad that they don't cover burn ins. I don't think anyone else covers burn ins.

Burn-in is not covered by any manufacturers warranty or service plan from any electronics retailer. I completely understand why this is not standard practice as there is no way to avoid burn-in (uneven phosphor wear) with most display technology if the end-user does not take responsibility for varying the length and types of content displayed on such devices. This is especially the case with CRT based technology. In no way should anyone but the end-user be responsible for burn-in, unless said burn-in is truly a freak occurance after only a few hours a day over a short period of time. Now if a consumer purchases a used product "as is" and discovers burn-in after they get said product home, by all means they should certainly return the product and purchase something else.
