i haven't been able to isolate what causes it and tried various different inputs, but about half the time i use my remote control to adjust the volume on my sony receiver it makes a loud static sound or crackling over the polk audio speakers. also, with the volume knob about half way up and nothing playing there is a noticeable noise level. i thought my receiver was just too cheap but after reading some posts i saw some people looking into the monster clean power strips or panamax devices for their onkyo or marantz receivers. would this solve my problem or is it something else? if this is the solution what would be the minimum model or dollar amount to spend on a clean power source?
Most of the time when you hear of static on a volume control it's because of "dust/grunge buildup" inside the receiver. This happens a lot if you don't change the volume much on your receiver (leaving it in the same range, most of the time) As you enter a new volume range, there is dust on the control.
You can sometimes eliminate the static by turning the volume knob back and forth many times (manually, right at the knob, not using the remote). Also, pull and push on the knob a bit while you're doing this. This helps to clean off the grunge.
If you have some of that "compressed air" and can spray that into the volume control, that may help.
This doesn't apply to newer receivers where there is no physical connection between the volume knob and the actual volume...
