I'm a newie to all of this, but I just bought a HLN5065 and planned on using it with my Hughes Direct TV - Tivo box until the HD Tivo comes out. Anyway, the picture almost across the board is lousy. Lots of artifacts and pixels everywhere. Everything is blurry.

Is this just how it is with non-HD sources? The DirecTiVo looked great on my Sony Wega (non-HD).

Please let me know. I may have to take this back.

THANKS!

are you watching non-HD through the component wires? if so, don't. use the s-video wire (with the STB set to 480i)

Called Samsung and they are going to send someone out to calibrate it, but the picture is so far off it looks like more than a simple tweak.

Thanks for the response.

There are many possible solutions to the poor quality of the SD picture on the HLN 5065W.

1. I improved picture quality by using input to the VCR and used its tuner (bypassing my cable box) with composite cables.

2. Now I'm trying an analog booster from Radio Shack on a split input to the set's Ant-A.

I think the VCR is still better.

The Motorola 5100 Comcast STB has a known problem with SD stations. The digital non-HD stations, 100-171 are much better directly from the cable box to the component port. The new Moto box is supposed to improve analog stations, so maybe this is a short-lived problem.

jjanthony,

Did you resolve your problem? I'm giving serious thought to buying an HLN, but am concerned about your problem.

Nope. Had 2 Bestbuy "techs" over and a Samsung guy. They all give me the line of "that's how it is with DirecTv". I'm planning on returning it.

The HD pictures are great, ditto for DVDs. But standard defintion is just lousy, at least through DirecTv.

Just be sure to have the store pipe in a SD signal, so you're not surprised like I am...

good luck

jj, in case you haven't done so already, check out the FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV". These items usually help to make the SD picture look a lot better.
