View Full Version : Volume Control For Speakers A & B?

How crazy of a feature is it for a receiver/amp to be able to have A & B speaker selectors both on at the same time with individual volume controls for each? My Sony STR-DG910 has A & B speaker selectors, but no individual volume controls (at least I don't see it). Does anybody have any experience with 1 of the those separate speaker selectors with individual volume controls? Or any other work-arounds for this? Thank you!

Simple actually...You just need to wire in a stereo volume control inline with the 'B' speakers...The volume will never go higher than the 'A' speakers but can be lowered...Or you can wire it into the 'A' side...whichever is more convienent...

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure that I do not have the confidence to cut a hole in my wall for this though ... never done that before. How complicated is the whole process?

All depends on just how fancy you want it to be...If the control needs to be in the same room as the 'B' speakers then it would be nice to wall mount...If you have never done a wallfish then you may have some difficulty depending on the room location...Or you could just leave the switch at the AVR location and set the volume there...

So I can just set this switch behind my amp/receiver (and not cut any holes in my wall)? That works for me, if its' possible. The speakers I'd need to connect the switch to would be my main floor speakers in our front room. Is this frowned upon or will there be any loss of quality with those speakers? I'm assuming each switch only connects to 1 pair of speakers, right? Thank you!

where are the B speakers now? How did you get the wire to them? Why would you need to cut a hole in a wall?

Sure...Personally I would think it to be more convienent to have the control in the room the speakers are in tho...

Especially if you want to hear how loud it is :D
Me personally, If it is a new purchase go exchange for a dual zone receiver.

The B speakers are outside in the backyard. Speaker wire is run under the house to them. But the new volume control switch would be for the A speakers in the front room (because those are the speakers I'd want to be played at a lower volume when both A & B are in use). And I was under the impression that the new volume control switch would need to be mounted in/on my wall in my front room, right?

That's where the new volume control switch would be ... for the A speakers in the front room. Just want to make sure there would be no loss in quality when I do want the speakers played at full strength.

Dual zone receiver ... with individual volume controls? In my original post, I was asking about this feature because I haven't found it.

Dang-it. I'm stuck with my Sony 910 for the near future (and I still don't see a way to individually/separately adjust the A/B volumes on it). I'm leaning toward 1 of these volume switches, but I still have a couple concerns. Since this new switch will be connected to my main floor speakers, I'm concerened about a loss of quality during normal everyday use (watching movies, TV, listening to music in only that room, etc). And second, I'm confused on the whole "impedance matching vs non-impedance matching" ... not sure what I'd need.

Thanks for the help. I went with the switch below, hooked it up, and it works perfectly. Thank you! http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/vrautrvoco.html
