I have a Sony Professional 42" Monitor, FWD42PX2 with a DVI input. Recently, I purchased a Sony STR-DG720 AV Receiver with (3) HDMI inputs with (1) HDMI output and a Sony Blu Ray BDP-300 BD Disk player with HDMI. I also have DIRECTV’s HD DVR with HDMI. I never dreamed I would have an issue with HDMI or DVI HDCP Handshakes. On purchase of the STR-DG720, I routed all HDMI to the AV Receiver and then out to the Monitor where I get sound, but no picture; has to be HDCP. Sony is noncommittal concerning the HDMI - DVI cable necessary to link to the Monitor. I have lost all features of the AV Receiver because of the handshake issues between the Receiver and the Monitor. I finally purchased a Octavis 5+1 HDMI switch to route all of my separate HDMI components to the Monitor since HDCP seems to be an issue from the AV Receiver to the Sony Monitor.

I am definitely unhappy with myself to say the least and have considered buying a new monitor with HDMI, but frankly, this Sony Professional Monitor is top of the line and except for HDMI to DVI HDCP handshakes. Is there a solution short of purchasing a new monitor? Thanks to all an Happy New Years!

I believe I recall some issues with the Sony 720, but also DVI must be HDCP to work. Is the monitor HDCP compliant - usually found in the specs? When I searched for the monitor, there was not a lot of information on whether the DVI was HDCP compliant.

Check the specs in the operating manual. If it's not, then you cannot really blame Sony, you will need to get a monitor that is HDCP compliant, which most HDMI interfaces are.

If it's an issue with the 720, then you should go after Sony to have new firmware fix this, or perhaps an upgrade to the 820?

I would try new a/v receiver. My neighbor has no issues using his onkyo 606, Sony 350 BD player and Direct HDDVR connected to a Samsung with DVI only

On another forum I just the other day read something about Sony receivers not doing something or another with HDMI to DVI...No picture I believe...I know the owner was very upset but it is something Sony knows about but has no plans on a remedy...

I appreciate the many replies! Since my difficulties reside with HDCP, do you think this issue results in the 720 not processing the handshake for a HDMI to DVI connector to the Sony Monitor? The DVI Sony monitor is HDCP. It has to be the DVI connector even though it is HDCP.

If all devices work directly connected to TV using the HDMI/DVI adapter and/or through an HDMI switch, then I'd assume that the 720 is highly suspect.

Hmmm, OK. Sony will not comment about DVI to HDMI cables via support call but mentions it specifically in the manual;

• We do not recommend using an HDMI-DVI
conversion cable. When you connect an
HDMI-DVI conversion cable to a DVI-D
component, the sound and/or the image may
not be output.

And all devices work connected to the Monitor....

I want HD to the monitor and the use of the AV receiver...

There you go then...

I want HD to the monitor and the use of the AV receiver...

Hopefully you can return/exchange the receiver for one that can accomodate your desires.

Pretty crappy that Sony won't acknowledge/support/address/resolve problems even when their own products won't "play nice" with each other.

And yet another reason for my animosity towards Sony. :sightv:

As stated in this thread, the 720, for some reason, has had a lot of issues. I'm not sure if they were resolved in the 820, but I believe they were. You may be able to fight for an upgrade to the 820 (at little or no cost), but I'm not 100% sure if it works either... Check the operating manual for the 820 to see if it contains a similar statement as the 720.
