as i add signal amps and splitters how important is it to ground these items?

when cable was new i remember the techs would always ground the splitters to a water pipe, it seems they dont anymore so should i?

The cable should be properly grounded as it comes into the home. Sometimes they did this at the first splitter, sometimes elsewhere. Further grounding should not be required, but feel free to do it - can't hurt.

It must be grounded to the electrical system ground. If it is not so, call the company and have them do it. They are responsible for installing it to electrical code specs.

The first few pages of your TV manual will have a diagram and notes on grounding signal systems.
