View Full Version : Speaking of HTIBs...

So I'm walking around Best Buy looking at HTIBs (both with DVD and without) and I'm hearing the Black Eyed Peas on some great sounding system a row over. This thing filled the whole A/V department with sound of the music, it sounded clear, the base was pretty damn good as well. I check it out, and to my surprise it's a Sony HTDDW750 surround sound receiver and its 5+1 speakers making all that beutiful noise.

I was a bit disappointed because I rather don't like Sony and am biased against its equipment (save for their FD monitors and digital camers). So, I decided to give it some time and look around the internet for something else and maybe come back later with my wife to see what she thinks of it.

After doing some research and hearing it in the store again, we decided to buy it. The reason is that it's black, just like my TV, VCR and DVD. Its speakers are small and so won't look out of place when placed on top of the cabinets right next to the TV, but most of all, because it had the most impressive sound out of all the systems below $350 and we bought it for $250.

It has 575 watts of total power. Or actually 500 watts for the receiver (100 watts x 5 channels) and 75 watts in the built in amp in the subwoofer. Considering that it filled Best Buy's A/V department with sound, it should be more than enough for my small 1 bedroom apartment. It also has Dolby Digital and DTS support and two digital inputs on the back (one optical and one coaxial) which should take care of the DVD and later the HDTV receiver.

So, for now, I also decided to keep my DVD (Panasonic RV-30) which cost me $300 when I bought it. It's not PS, it can't play MP3s or burned VCDs, but it will play every DVD I throw at it and it should hold me over untill the time when I can buy a quality DVD that can play DIVX and will look good with component cables. Considering that you can already buy one for $200 (albeit with a very poor component connection) I should be able to find something good and relatively cheap by Christmas.

So for now the following is my system:
50" Toshiba 50H72, Sony HTDDW750 5+1 surround sound system, Panasonic DVD RV-30 and a Toshiba VCR.

Yeah it's so last year, but the whole thing cost me only $1700 including all taxes:D
