Getting ready to calibrate my 6.1 speaker set-up. I have the RS analog SPL meter which I will mount on a tripod and place in the in the primary listening position at about ear level.
Question: What is the recommened direction the SPL meter should face? Point upright to ceiling(mine is sloped), horizontal pointing forward or at some angle pointing to the intersection of front wall and ceiling or another direction?
Any input will be appreciated.

I believe that the correct position is pointing upward, but I don't recall it making that much difference as I rotated it into various positions.

As you're doing your calibration, you may wish to remove it from the tripod and "move it around" a bit, especially if there are alternate seating positions. This can be a bit of an "art" as well as simple science.

For example, despite readings from my SPL, I set my center channel a few dB "louder" simply because I found much of the dialogue from movies difficult to hear at the supposedly balanced position.

Also, because I sit a little further from my LR than my RR, I increased the volume of the LR a bit above what the SPL indicated, once "real" DD5.1 sound was heard. The "pink noise" or "white noise" used for calibration may react in your room differently from what you actually hear from movies/music...

Remember what your ears hear is more important than what your meter reads.
