480P remains 480P
480I goes up to 540P
720P goes up to 1080I
1080I stays 1080I

No choice.

since the original question is answered I got a follow-up question.
Why is there conversion to 540p? My Toshiba does it and obviously some STB's does it. Why would this format be choosen? 480p which is a standard would have seen so much smarter / simpler - am I missing something here?

Because 540p and 1080i use the same scan frequencies. Ergo rather than have a complex video out subsystem everything gets scaled/displayed as 1080i or 540p.

FTR

non HD output everything is 480i

HD out

480i -> 540p
480p ->540p
720p ->1080i
1080i ->1080i

Just to keep clear:

"non HD output everything is 480i" is incorrect.

480i is referred to as Standard Definition.
480P (540p) is Enhanced Definition
720p (and up) is High Definition

I was incorrect earlier where I stated that 480p remains 480p. That reference only applies to the RCA/Proscan TV's with a 'built in" DTC-100 tuner (I.E. F38310) and only is applicable to those TV's component input(s).

The topic was the DTC-100 STB not the F38310 Combo TV/STB

The S-video and composite outputs can only display 480i (even if the source is HD )

the HD/RGB output can only display 540p and 1080i. 480i and 480p BOTH get scaled to 540p on the HD output. 480i and 480p can be zoomed/strteched to full screen but it is still a scaling to a 540p frame.

I did correct my mistake... cut me a break!

The S-video and composite outputs can only display 480i (even if the source is HD )
I believe that this is a fact for all STB's.

the HD/RGB output can only display 540p and 1080i.
Yes... I agreed (after my faux pas.... mea culpa, mea culpa)![/b]
