I am wondering if any of the Panasonic group is still using one of the older HD Ready Projection TVs like my PT47WX49E with a newer DirecTv HD DVR box? How does the picture with 1080i via component conections (no HDMI) compare with older non-HD DirecTV boxes? I am thinking about doing the receiver box upgrade but if I need a newer LCD type TV with HDMI connections - I'll probably put it off for a while longer.
Component video cables give you an HD signal. The comparison between HD and an SD STB would be like night and day when watching the HD channels on any HDTV.

I had a Panasonic PT53WX42F up until the convergence went out a week before the Superbowl! DOH! I had just upgraded in October from the older Directv HD Tivo box to the new HD receiver. Let me tell you, dude, you don't know what you're missing until you see these tv's in high-def! Day and night is an understatement! DO IT! You'll be SO glad you did!
P.S. I only had the component hookups, and it worked great! Much easier with the new HDMI, but still a great picture with the old components!

On that note, I have DishHD and it is connected by your tipical cables. I see I have HDMI connection on back of my Panasonic pt-53x54j and HDMI behind the dishhd reciever. Will I experience a better picture with the HDMI connection?
With a TV properly calibrated for each input/type, you will not see a significant difference. See the following relevant threads:
