I have a scientific atlanta explorer 3100hd, it is plugged via component inputs into my hitachi 57swx20b widescreen. When I tune to all channels, there are bars on the side, like it is broadcasting in 4:3. I checked all my tv settings, and nothing is set on video 2 for this kind of format. Do you guys have any ideas, there is nothing in the stb menu to switch from 4:3 to 16:9.
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum !
I have the same STB. It doesnt have the option of selecting the aspect ratio. Only HD will be displayed in 16:9 and all SD material will be displayed in 4:3 will black bars on the sides. The newer models of SA STB are supposed to have those options.
IMO, I dont think SA 3100HD does a good job of upconverting SD via component connections, so its not worth watching it via component connections.
You might want to use composite or S-video for better picture quality. Then you can use stretch modes of your TV to fill the screen.
If you have a moment, please check the FAQ section on homepage of this forum.
If you recently bought your TV, please make sure its not running in TORCH mode. This might cause burn in. Reduce contrast and brightness to suit your viewing. Or you could invest in setup DVDs such as S&V, Avia, VE etc to set your TV settings optimally.
