On my set there is a slight vertical scanline problem in progressive scan where you can make out the scanlines starting from the left and right edges and going in a few inches. When the 16:9 zoom mode is turned on it gets even worse. It almost looks like a moire-type problem. With an interlaced picture it's not hardly as visible, but still there. The phosphor pixels in this area also seem to lose their rectangular defintion and become more roundish (this is only when they're being scanned... the actual phosphor columns are straight bars when not being scanned).
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem or if it's just an isolated case. I also want to know if there's anyway it can be fixed (like through the service menu). Thanks for any help. I do have a little feeling that it might not be fixable though. I did get an extended service warranty from Circuit City, but I honestly don't want to hastle with changing the service menu back to the original settings and hauling it all the way back to them...
I posted this in another forum and someone mentioned that it could be a result from a warped shadow mask. They also suggested that messing around with the geometry could lessen this problem quite a bit. Here's the catch 22 though: the moire-like goof can only be seen well when the 16:9 zoom mode is turned on. However, when I enter the service menu I have no control over the 16:9 zoom mode. When I turn the TV off to press the buttons in order to get into the service menu the TV defaults back to no zoom at all. This leaves me where I have no way of seeing if the effects of this problem are being lessened or not :(
If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated! I'm probably going to have to wind up letting Samsung know about this and see what they have to say.
