View Full Version : Hughes E86 STB Question

My first post!

Bought a new E86 STB last night and hooked it up to terrestrial to see what I could get. Somewhat dissapointing reception, but I'll fix that this weekend.

My question is about the picture I'm getting from the STB. I noticed during setup, that I got a rolling effected with the blue backround of the setup screens. It's like the old TVs would do when the horizontal hold was messed up. But, this was only within the colors on the screen, the picture itself is stationary as it should be.

Later, I noticed this with Red colors on the programms. This occured both during normal digital TV and HD as well as both with SVideo and the (forgive me) the three color 1080 inputs. Can this be fixed by me? Should I return the STB (I bought it as an open box and this is prolly why).

My TV is a 2 year old Mitsu HD Ready 55" 16:9. I haven't experienced this problem before hooking up the new STB.

Thanks and this site rules. I've sent many a people here when they ask about my system and how to build something like it.

I had the same thing happen with mine. It happened with the blue screens and then I was watching a news anchor with a red shirt this morning and it was terrible. I tried switching all the cables to different inputs with no luck.

I started to wonder if something around the TV could be causing interference. I had a set of cordless headphones that operate on 900mhz near the set, so I moved those. No luck. Then I realized that the RF antenna for the remote was unplugged. I plugged it back in and the rolling was gone. I only watched it for a few minutes before I left for work, but it seems to have fixed the problem. I'll post again if it comes back.

Hope this helps.

ok, here is your answer, and it's been tested by me:

the box gets absurdly hot. when it gets hot the picture starts to "roll". the solution i found was that, if you look on the bottom of the STB, you'll see their are vents there too. seeing this, i propped the STB up on something to allow FULL ventilation. Havent had the problem since.
i had actually had the box replaced, but it happened on both, so that's why i'm pretty sure it's not the box. try what i said, and perhaps if you have one of those tiny fans that attach to computers etc, aim it at the box to keep the heat flowing.

let me know if this helps. good luck

I'll try these when I get home tonight. I'm sure it is the heat. I have it sitting on my receiver, so that's even worse.

How much did you pay for it? Circuit City has this box for $399.99 after a $100 rebate this week.

I was thinking about picking one up because after 20+ years as a Comcast subscriber, I'm REAL close to switching to DirecTV.

I need to make up my mind soon though, the sale ends this Saturday.

Who is the rebate through? CC or Hughes?

I paid $399 for an open box. $100 rebate would be sweet. Thanks.

The rebate was through Circuit City.

Usually rebates don't apply to open box items as they are already discounted.

Ultimate Electronics has it until AUG 9th as well for
$399.90, it is for new subscribers & comes with the 2 room
setup. I talked to a guy at Best Buy & he says they price match
plus 10%. The Ultimate electronics ad also comes with a $50.00
gift card. I'm taking the add to BB tomorrow and see what I can
get it for there.

I had the same problem with mine. Heat is definately the cause of the rolling effect. I raised the unit up 1 inch allow more air to flow thru. Have not seen the rolling effect since.

I too have a Hughes e86 and a Mits HD-Ready. I also notice this rolling effect on Red and Blue colors. It happens only on the S-Video output (not the 1080i). The reciever is properly ventilated, so I don't think it is heat related. Called the Hughes Support Line. He recommended grounding my dish/cable (which I didn't do during installation)....live in CA with very rare electrical storms. Any support out there for this logic?

This is my current status as well. I don't really watch it on S vid ever, so not too concerned, but for five hondo I'd think we'd have a slightly better experience...

Saw the following at a ISF calibrator's website:
Other problems I frequently see are incorrect grounding of the dish and coax, which can cause hum bars on your video display. ':)'

Why would you ever and I mean ever set anything on top of your receiver??? As everyone mentioned the Hughes E86 requires good ventilation.
