(AP) In the cable industry's latest move to combat competition from satellite TV, Charter Communications Inc. will soon introduce its most feature-packed cable set-top box yet. The box, to be released in the fall, records programming onto a hard drive, has a built-in DVD player and can serve as a media center for digital photos and music.
The dual-tuner device supports two TVs, allowing users to simultaneously record two different shows, or watch one program in one room while playing another show in another. It also supports high-definition television, video-on-demand and pay-per-view services. The device also has Ethernet or wireless networking capabilities, so users can transfer digital music or photo files from a desktop computer. :D

Well this will certainly get the Dish-heads buzzing and the competition heated to a firey extreme......
Charters initial order said to be 100,000 from Motorola.
Is this the PROMISE Box or What..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RSlack
Of course the downside is that it costs $1,400. That plus a $19.95/month service fee.

These have been out there for awhile now. In fact my boss has one, the DCP-501 which is an older version. It is about the size of a receiver and incorporates a DCT 2000, receiver, tuner and DVD player. These are pricey boxes and the newer ones retail for about $1000.

I would really be surprised if Charter actually purchased these units to lease to their customers. I think the Motorola approach has always been a retail strategy. But I could be wrong...

Unfortunately, the dual tuner PVR will not be available until 2004, possibly in Q1 but more likely in Q2.
Motorola's single tuner PVR box (6208) will begin testing in a few weeks and will be available probably September-ish...

All they need to do know is get off their collective asses and get HDTV to the rest of their customers, as far as I know their market for this product is still pretty small. Charter service has been dismal in my neck of the woods.
WAKE UP CHARTER!!!!!
Charter High Definition Service™ is currently available in five markets:
Alhambra, CA; Glendale/Burbank, CA; Kalamazoo, MI; Park Cities, TX; South Miami, FL; and Leeds, AL.

For whatever reason, the HDTV availability list hasn't updated in some time.
Below is the most current list I have, but I believe there are actually additional markets which have been added since this list was compiled.
Alhambra, CA; Glendale/Burbank, CA; Park Cities, TX; South Miami, FL; Birmingham, AL Metro (Scientific Atlanta Areas only); Ft. Worth, TX; Kalamazoo, MI; and Newtown, CT.

I read that the rollout market they were sending these to is Rochester, MN which means I am eligible, but they still keep having outage problems and just bad service. That's why I made the switch to DirecTV. If they offer HDTV out here and their service is back to par I might switch back. I just called them and asked about HDTV service and they don't know when it will be available.

The new boxes wont do us any good if we still only have HBO and Discovery. We need more HD channels.
