Right now i'm using a non-HD directv sat receiver, but i'm hoping to upgrade to an HD STB soon. I've only had this receiver for 2 months and i'm locked in for a 12 mo. contract with directv. Now, if i get the HD STB, and i still obligated to pay for the old receiver even if i continue my directv contract, just with a new STB? What happens to the access card? I'm not really familiar with how these access cards work.
thanks

Access cards are a sticky subject, with all the hacking going on.

I am not really sure what your question is, but if you get the HD receiver, you are still obligated to maintain the 12 month contract. Your old receiver should already be paid for. Just call DirecTV and tell them you are upgrading your receiver.

With all the changes to the access cards going on right now, your new HD receiver might not even come with a card. If that is the case, you can just use the old card in your new receiver, and don't worry about calling DirecTV to get another card. DirecTV registers the card and not your equipment, so your contract is still being maintained.
