I bought this tv when it first was sold. I am not totally sure but it was some time ago. I would guess 6 or 7 years ago.
It has been really good compared to some of the other products that I have bought.
When I got it, I configured it with the Avia DVD and I adjust the convergence on it occassionally. (I probably should run the Avia DVD since I have not done it for years)
I have always connected the tv via component cables.
Prior to circuit city closing, I bought a DVI-HDMI adapter. I got the bright idea to buy a HDMI cable. It was a $35 Panasonic cable from Wal Mart (I think). I wanted to see if I could take advantage of this connection and free up one of the component connections
What I noticed is the picture noticeably inferior compared to the compotent connection. You can watch it but the colors do not look right.
I gave up the idea and switched back to component.
Recently, I was in Wal Mart (I know not exactly the best place for cables) and I saw an HDMI-DVD cable that was reasonably priced
I am wondering if anyone has any insight on this.
Is this a likely scenario?
Will the adapter impede the performance of the digital cable?
Should I try a new cable?
Could it be the SA 3100 cable box?
Could the tv need to be recalibrated? And if so, will that make any other device feeding the tv look horrible?
Should I try a different cable brand? Does a digital signal require a superior cable?
I have not been on the website for a while.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bill
1. If the signal is getting through, it's doubtful that the cable is an issue. A digital signal doesn't require a superior brand, although I usually recommend a single cable rather than an adapter, especially when a cable can be purchased for under $10.
See: http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=21206
2. What is more likely is that the DVI input is set up differently than the component video connection on the TV and needs to be properly optimized (set up)
See: http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=1440
3. The SA3100HD is a very old STB. If you're renting it, replace it.

57U,
Thanks I will get a different cable and look into getting a newer cable box
For this application -
Would you recommend the monoprice, tartan or any other brand in that price range?
I assume that by calibrating the TV, you mean running the AVIA program through the DVI connection?
My problem is that my DVD player does not have an HDMI connection.
I am considering upgrading some components. I guess I need to post some other question as well

My problem is that my DVD player does not have an HDMI connection.
For your DVI input, you can use the calibration settings that you used for your component inputs to start. From what I've read, there is usually very little difference between component and HDMI, so you should get a relatively nice picture if using the component settings.
Just keep in mind, because the source is different, STB vs DVD player, you might have to tweek the DVI input settings. For example, your DVD player might be outputting material that is darker than the norm, so you'll have to account for those differences.

Or... if you can't obtain satisfactory HDMI/DVI results after doing calibration and need additional component video inputs, try a component video switch.

I configured the TV with the DVD player. When viewing the STB after this configuration it looks great. Apparently the DVD and STB (with the component cables) are similar.
However, the DVI connection looks significantly different. I will ask for a new cable box and change the cable to see what happens.
I have been considering getting a PS3. Any suggestions on a blu ray configuration disc?

Do you lose any noticeable picture with a switch?

Ratman,
Thanks I saw them.
I wanted to know if anyone prefered one over the other
When I got my Avia DVD back in 2001, it was suggested for a certain reason. I dont quite remember.
I rather spend the extra money if one is noticeably better or provides additional features.

Not supposed to... or they probably wouldn't be selling them. ;) Of course you could always spend a lot more for switch or maybe just get a new HDTV or AVR to accomodate your connectivity requirements.

Them? It's the same BRD calibration disc, just examples of two suppliers. AFAIK, Avia does not have a BRD version.
