Hey all,
I have a GeForce4 TI 4400 and am considering purchasing a HDTV set. when i saw the JVC AV48WP30 that has the DVI HDCP connector i got really excited - so i went out to best buy and tried to see if they could demonstrate what the picture looks like if you connect a computer with DVI out put to the set.
Not too surprisingly the sales-boy said that he didnt think it would work and he would not even try to see. this is very annoying as that would be a major deal maker if it would display PC content with digital clarity (i am sooo sick of the analog s-video out on the geforce cards - a dreacast looks better than my several generations ahead vid card on an analog tv) If the DVI out looked good - then i will be set for the true cinematic experience when DoomIII comes around..
please let me know what you think - if any one has this model of JVC tv or some other progressive scan screen with DVI input and have seen what the image is like with a pc DVI source (if it is possible)
i am kinda surprised that no one else has posted about this...

I recall reading somewhere that the dvi for pc's and dvi for televisions are incompatable, or in other words different kinds of dvi. Don't know if its true. I believe it was in the article in Home Theatre magazine two months ago in the article dealing with wires and cable connections...i think it was titled 'Getting Plugged In' Anyone else? Sorry can't be sure, me thinks my memory is going on me :D

Hello:
I just purchased the Sony KV-32HS500 with the DVI connector.
I also have a GeForce 3 with DVI outputs. In looking at the TV DVI connector and those on my video card - they have different pin outs.
While I have no cable to attempt the connection and therefore do not know if all the pins are used, however, it does not look good.
BTW the TV rocks.

Here's a link to a discussion with more info than you probably want about the various versions of DVI:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_monitor_cables.html
There are several interesting hotlinks at the end of the page.
I am/was curious about the JVC HDTV you mentioned but now am leery. I use DVI between my ATI Radeon video and Planar LCD monitor so was also lusting for a 48" video monitor.:(

So does anybody have an update on this?
Neither http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/...tor_cables.html nor dell's brief suggest it might not work...

ATI Radeon 9x00 series supports both Component and DVI-HD tv's using a special adapter that you can buy separately from ATI. I believe the All-in-Wonder series has one in the box; it should since its almost $200 more expensive :) I have a 9700Pro but am considering buying the adapter. Battefield 1942 on a 53" tv in 16:9!

Hi,
Have been investigating PC to HDTV just recently and thus far, havn't had much success.
I have a Mitsubishi 65" HDTV but no DVI. Was told by a cable engineer that the DVI format is dead, and will no longer be of any use to HDTV. Probably because of HDPC to prevent copyrights.
He told me that the most important thing for PC to HDTV connection is the Video Card's ability to produce the proper output resolution to the TV.
I have a Gforce4 64-meg card with DVI-I, S-video, and VGA. He said that the connections make no difference ( the signal is exactly the same from the video card--just a matter of pins--DVI-D just video, DVI-I Video and Audio, etc.).
After checking all the resolutions available from the video card, must be 80-100 or so, none seem to match the 740-440 (I think this is correct, don't have my notes with, could be 780-440), but at any rate, this is what is needed of the video card to plug directly to the TV. There were lower resolutions that might work, but then there is much difference than normal TV resolution.
Have just started to investigate, so will let you know and further developments. I just wanted to show my digital photos on a large screen TV at a high resolution so they would look good. Have tried VCD, etc, but they look terible to me.
If anyone else has a Mitsubishi 411 HDTV and have had any success with the computer output, please let me know.
Thanks in advance,

Check out AVSForum (http://www.avsforum.com) in the Home Theatre Personal Computer (HTPC) section.
In many cases it is quite doable. Some software is required, namely Powerstrip, that forces the card to output the appropriate resolution.
Also check out myHTPC (http://www.myhtpc.net) for some excellent front end software (free) that can hide the Windows desktop.
A few new versions of software and hardware HD tuners are coming/are out that have DVI outputs.
I've got my HTPC pretty well set up now. Using it on a computer monitor until I get an HDTV (still looking). I have the HTPC hooked up to the network and can stream DVD's throughout the house. DVDShrink software can quickly backup a DVD to your harddrive. You can cut out all the extras, including the opening and closing credits. You can pare down the DVD to about 4 or 5 gigs usually.
My plan is to have a server on the network with several hundred gigs of storage to hold my collection. The myHTPC frontend allows you to select the DVD by coverart and immediately start watching. DVDProfiler software will give you the coverart and other goods simply by entering the SKU.
It's still pretty early in the game, but all this software is going to come together this year and really flesh out. I think we will start to see the industry head this direction. (It already is with Microsoft's Media Center Edition.)

Hiya,
I read this thread to get some info ... and i saw everyone was giving up.
I had read somewhere and someone had it working ... u need to get a DVI-D cable both male going from computer to TV and also u need to set timings (power strip) to do so...
U dont need extra adapters or kits to do it... so apparently it should work.. the ati gig i think sets the timing right on the adapter and its also colourstream and not DVI.
I bought a dvi cable and i havnt had the chance to try it.. once i do.. ill update u guys.
thanx
