Our local Sinclaior station is operating at much less than 1%
of allocated power and at 1/4 of the tower height. Yet, here
in town, at least where I live, in a small hollow, it is ROCK SOLID.
That leaves the issue of HDTV ... and they are NOT doing HDTV.
Interference is, however, a problem in some other stations
around here when, like last night, there is really strong tropo
propagation. On one channel ... full power but twice as far away,
I had it break up on my Radio Shack dual bowtie with no reflector.
Sure enough, an analog picture was visible on their digital channel.
Using my long Yagi for that channel solved the problem.
And, of course, had we used COFDM, I would have needed a 4 dB
better antenna than we need for ATSC (at the same bitrate ...
and that channel needs all the bits it can, since it has one 720p and
one 480i program (latter is low bitrate weather.)

Well I challenge you here as everywhere you post.
Other modulations can be used in the US now. Bring your modulator and 8-VSB receiver to New york. Pick a power level. Pick a location in New York City where you can receive 8-VSB HDTV and we will show you reception of HDTV using other modualtions systems. Further we will find 100 locations where you can't get HDTV 8-VSB but can get HDTV with our modulation. We will of course use the same power and antenna as you do.
And then of course we will do the driving test. Mobile portable stuff like that. And we will then challenge you to use the antenna WE pick, the antenna height WE pick and the POWER level WE pick.
If multipath is a red herring then you must feel real lucky. I have power levels and antenna heights you and 8-VSB are just going to love.
Missed you in Toronto. See you soon. Bring a Lynx or any other "miracle receiver" you have.
