There is a good deal of user-reported information about the Kameleons at .RemoteCentral (http://www.remotecentral.com). Check the main review and News section. Also, navigate to the OneForAll Forum and look for Kameleon posts.
For example, here (http://www.remotecentral.com/wn030425.htm) and here (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-one4all/thread.cgi?3123) .
And here...

Picked up the Radio Shack 15-2133 Kameleon. I had a Mosaic that went to my son when I got the new RPTV last year.
I read the review in the link above. I probably didn't read enough. I think I was looking for more than it could do :( I needed (wanted) to be able to move the keys around, place them where I wanted, label them.
Guess I got spoiled by the Mosaic.
Neither of the Onkyo 'Receiver Codes' would power my receiver on. Didn't have much control over my TV either. Same with DVD player. Seemed to only do the most basic functions. Not many key choices to program to from the original remote.
I expected too much for $60.
That display is good looking, bright and very easy to see.
I'll search the forum for information on the Sony remote or just go to another Mosaic.

Lees did it not have a learning function so you could have the remote learn other buttons from your other remotes...
Yes it did. But there weren't buttons to train them to, or not buttons with labels I wanted to use :(
For the TV needed something for input, stretch modes. For the Onkyo needed something for standby or power off. The Onkyo doesn't use the same code for power on and power off. Nothing for the DVD to use for Progressive or Interlaced. That's just a few.
Unless I really missed something.
I know the Mosaic does it all, make your own buttons and labels. Looking into the Sony AV3000. I'll read the reviews a little closer this time.

mikehbkwm,
All is not lost :) Traded my son for the Mosaic I gave him with my old Pioneer RPTV. The Kameleon worked great for his HT, we got it all programmed this evening.
I'll miss that nice bright blue display.
With the Mosaic you can make your own keys, put them where you want and label them as you want or assign a graphic to them.
Not sure of the Mosaic 9950's status, I had to go to a UK site to check codes and get the manual.
Checked on the Sony AV3000 at Fry's Electronics. $199. I'd really want to play with it before I took the plunge. Looks good. AdminJoe mentioned the Sony in a comment in the Gallery. Wonder if he has one?

Lee,
I'm new to the 'smart' remote arena, but am thinking of maybe getting one for XMas. I saw one that a friend has, but I didn't get to play with it since he was still setting it up. I'm not sure which model it was, but I thought it was something like an M-300.
Anyway, my question is, Ccan any of these be set up to control different devices at the same time (without having to select the device first)? What I'm looking for is something that could change TV inputs, change cable box channels, and change receiver volume without having to switch from TV to cable to receiver each time I want to change something. I'd like to be able to just pick up the remote and do those things that I do most often. If I have to still change devices, I'm not sure it's now just as easy (and cheaper) to use the individual remotes that I have sitting on a table next to my chair. Most remotes that I have will control all thse devices, but each one requires the device to be selected first.
Am I making any sense?
The remote that came with my Yamaha RX-V1 receiver can do exactly what you ask.
- Change TV inputs
- Change STB channels
- Change A/V Receiver volume
all without switching "components". I would be on "STB" to do the above.
The only thing I had to "programme in" was the TV inputs.
I can do similar things when set to "DVD" - all DVD functions, plus volume, plus stretch modes.
I assume if my "free" remote can do this, that programmable remotes can too, but it would depend on the capability of the remote, number of "soft" and "hard" buttons, etc.

Thanks, I'll have to look closer to my Denon 3803 remote, maybe I just haven't looked hard enough at it.

I think my remote that came with the 2300 is the same that comes with the V1. It has learning and macro capabilities, I think its model RAV227, I will check that.
In addition to what 57 said, I can use functions like turn on TV, DVD and reciever at once when I use the macros.
I didnt have program any information other than some specific STB functions that I wanted. This remote had the codes for all the makes of equipment that I have.
This is a cool remote that came with the reciever. :D
DoubleDAZ,
What 57U said.
The ability to do macros is the key.
The Radio Shack remote does 4 macros with up to 15 steps each.
I've never tried setting the volume with the Mosaic, just never thought about it :). But I will the next chance I get. The only thing that is a pain, if you make a mistake you have to start over. No macro edit function.
Go to http://www.remotecentral.com and check out the reviews.
A picture of the Mosaic is in the Gallery.

57U/LeeS. Thanks to both of you for the info. I am going to be doing quite a bit of research between now and XMas to see if there is something that will fit my budget. I haven't looked yet, but I don't believe the Denon remote will fill the bill (it was free).

You can call the phone number in the diirections they give you with the remote and if the code in the directions doesn't work they will give it to you over the phone. If that doesn't work you call them back and you lay the remote next to the phone and a series of beeps go off and the remote is programed, souds crazy but I've done it.
