View Full Version : Anybody else having problems with 720p XBox games + Mitusbishi HDTV?

I think the subject says it all.

I have a Mits WS-73909 and it seems to go blackscreen whenever there's a 720p game (so I have to disable HDTV modes from the XBox dashboard), like in Soul Caliber II and NCAA 2k3.

Anybody else having this problem (presumably from the Mits trying to upconvert the 720p signal of the XBox)? Any workarounds?

Thanks!

I don't think the Mits supports 720p.

Mitsubishi doesn't accept 720P signals, sorry.

See the FAQ "If only I'd have known".

57U,

I have had a 60" Mitsubishi for about seven years and have been very happy with it. I have been researching to upgrade to HDTV and my first choice was the new 2004 sets with DVI connection either in 65" or 73". Today As I was reading various posts I learned that Mitsubishis dont accept 720p natively. Since I want a TV that does everything (or close to it), can you tell me what brands in the 65" size range do the 720p. Does the Samsung 61" DLP display 720p natively?

See the FAQ "Types of HDTV".

DLPs display 720P.

LCDs typically do 768P. (similar to 720P)

Since these are fixed pixel displays, all incoming signals get converted to this native resolution.

All CRT-based RPTVs do not display 720P natively. Some can accept 720P converting it to 1080i.

This really doesn't matter all that much. It depends on which type of TV you want, for what reason.

From what I read and what you have posted in various places, the 720 matters most to the gamers. My question is which picture quality is better, 720p or 1080i or can I even notice the difference. I really want a big TV (65" or 73") that is bright and would not become obsolete in the next few years. As I said before I was looking at the 2004 Mitsubishis or the Samsung 61" DLP.

PLEASE DONT START A FLAME WAR ON 1080i vs 720p LOL JK :p .... anyway my personal opinion would be to go with the DLP....... as you can see what i have i love my mits...... but you can guarantee the next set i get will be a DLP or a LCoS whichever is cheaper and is the best technology in 2 yrs......... The biggest DLP is 61in and ive personally messed around with the set and love it............. very very very bright and no messing with geometry or convergance............... hope this helps

ill say this about 1080i/720p.... its like what is your favorite pop or what is your favorite pizza...... either one is great and there is no right answer........ ive viewed a baseball game on ESPN HD on our DLP set up here at where i work and then have gone home and watched on mine and saw no difference at all........

Mike,

Thank you very much for your comments. I am really thorn between Mitsubishi and Samsung. I wish they had a bigger DLP like 65" or 73". Maybe they'll have it in a few months. I am going to CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Vegas in January and will see all the latest sets but don't know if I could hold that long without HDTV.

Thanks again for your comments.

One other question on the 720p subject.

So what happens when an XBox is hooked up to a Mitsubishi which doesn't support 720p. Does it upconvert it to 1080i?

If a TV doesn't accept 720P signals you get a blank screen.

CRT-based RPTVs that accept 720P signals typically convert the signals to 1080i (Hitachi, Toshiba, most Sonys).

If your TV doesn't accept 720P, you can set the module to output 480P.

Thanks 57U,

Specifically what does Mitsubishis which don't have 720p do in this case? Do they downconvert to 480p or upconvert to 1080i?

Thanks leadvocal. I was wondering if what I wrote had disappeared, or been unclear.

57U,

Thank you for making the 720p and 1080i very clear for me.
