This has certainly been rumour for a while (DL going HD), but I'll believe it when I see it.

It is my understanding that Letterman will premiere in HD the last week in September for the October Sweeps. The new opening was shot over the summer.

Any new info on when Letterman goes HDTV?

CBS used to broadcast this show and it appeared with the black side bars, but lately it is in a digital stretch mode on my OTA CBS channel 2-1.....Hopefully this isn't their example of Dave in HD!

There is very little programming that I would stick with that is non HD over HD. Letterman and Leno are perfect examples. My personal tastes dictate Letterman over Leno, IMHO. But I will watch Leno because of HD. If Letterman was HD I would never watch Leno. HD dictates what I watch 90% of the time.

Haven't seen much about this lately, but at least a couple times a week when they're doing something wacky on the show and you catch a glimpse of the cameras, they are HD - what's up with this? When will he be in HD??

PS...
Took my own advice and went to CBS's web link feedback.

Haven't heard back yet! I tried to make my message as friendly as possible, complimenting them on the rest of their HD lineup. Hopeing a little sugar would get a response. :D

We would love to finally see Letterman in HD...........not sure why they can't go ahead and add that show to the lineup, since it appears they've been using HD cameras for quite awhile.

Though we're not usually big on sitcoms, we (the sometimes leatherclad ms. and myself) really like CBS's Monday night lineup.

Also, CSI is another of our faves - I am constantly sitting on the couch nudging her, going: "babe.......look at that stunning clarity, those brilliant colors! man, did you see that? you can read the lettering on the milk cartons, or the papers on the fridge in the background!!"

Ah, the simple joys in life............

Why is Letterman listed on HDTV programs? If it's not in HD.

I heard that Letterman saw what he looked like in HD and has refused to let CBS air it.

:D

"Talkies" eliminated a lot of the silent movie stars because they had little to no voice acting talent.

HD will eliminate televisions "Ugly" factor.

No offense Dave.

Adult channels would be fine, if they use beautiful woman!

then it would make TV even more enjoyable to watch.

"If they use beautiful women" is the point. I don't think you want to see most of them up close.

Thats funny because I am the complete opposite, I like Leno over Letterman any day of the week. It doesn't matter to me at all if DL is in HD. He seems too East Coast to me, (No offense) I just get burnt on his all NY all the time show.

(From the Spring 2004 Buyer's Guide issue of 'HDTV etc' magazine)

In an interview with Robert Seidel, VP of Engineering and Technology for CBS, who's responsible for HD at CBS and a leading spokesperson and advocate for high definition, he was asked the following question:

HDTV ETC.: What HD plans does CBS have for programs like Survivor and The Late Show with David Letterman?

BOB SEIDEL: Well, first let me say that The Late Show will probably arrive in HD sometime this year. We just don't know when yet. I can tell you that we have completely upgraded the control room with new HD equipment. We are in the process of changing the camera and all related equipment. Once that is accomplished, we will then change the set. The problem with bringing a show like The Late Show to high definition is that they have very little down time. Once we find some time to do it, it will happen very quickly.

(there was more on Survivor and other things, but this was it for The Late Show)

could you please say what the scoop on survivor was?

57U
04-29-2004, 10:58 PM
Survivor requires too many HD cameras (expensive, potential damage) in a distant location (for only one use (out of survice from other "better" uses)). AND few people who watch survivor have HD ;)

57U pretty much summed-up the deal on Survivor...........personally, I'd rather watch Martha Stewart in HD than waste my type watching that (and similarly) overhyped bullhockey.............but that's just me........ :boo2:

I agree with gator, I have HD and love Survivor (lik many others). I think it SHOULD be in HD especially considering the ratings it gets, not to mention the scenery would be amazing.

I'll agree that Survivor should be HD. It's a very popular show and the locations would look amazing in HD. Imagine how cool it would look to see a dirty, ragged survivor eating a big cockroach in HD!!

Just FYI, I didn't watch the first season of Survivor because I thought it was stupid idea. However, now I see it as a good case study in psychology and sociology. Very interesting to watch the group dynamic.

Yeah, I would LOVE to see Survivor in HD. The scenery alone would make it worthwhile! My favorite HD shows are all nature/outdoors/scenery type things where the colors and the views overwhelm the senses. Good stuff!

Once upon a time, I watched Letterdud, but he just got tired. Then, I swithced to Leno and he was great. His show is now tired, some of the bits he does are funny, as are some of the bits that Dave does. I think Dave is funnier in a direct comparison, but Tonight Show beats Late show.

Survivor is played out. Very cool premise, good show initially, but let it go for a while, then come back to it.

I don't watch a single program on CBS on a regular basis. The only time I watch CBS is during the NCAA Final Four.

I think Letterman in HD would bring in new viewers. After all, how many of us now watch things in HD that we NEVER would have watched in SD?

Letterman isn't as funny (i.e. innovative) as he used to be, but he's still a MUCH better interviewer than Leno. Leno seems like he's intimidated (for lack of a better word) by his guests. He just doesn't have the charisma to be in interviewer. Leno's fans will get older just like Letterman's did and people will begin saying the same things about Jay.

Letterman and Leno are both duds compared to Conan. His is the only late night show i laugh out loud at on a regular basis.....Lets get conan in HD

Letterman has the HD cameras already. I remember a few years ago he was going on a rant about how they got all these new expensive HD cameras and all they're being used for is to set coffee cups on top of or hang their coats on.

Survivor doesn't need HD cameras to broadcast in HDTV, that excuse falls flat. It's not a live show, they can use film! For one of the most watched shows on television, they're extremely cheap for not using film or HD cameras. Discovery Channel seems to be doing fine with broadcasting remote locations...

57U
06-21-2004, 02:53 PM
Film is much more expensive, to post process. That's why they prefer to use tape, even HD tape/cameras, which are more expensive at the start, but cheaper in post-processing.

Yeah, film is expensive and requires alot more post production. But CBS is home to so many horrible dramas nobody watches, and they're all shot using expensive film.

I was sitting here watching Jeff Corwin on Discovery HD wondering about this. If Discovery can get the HD cameras down to Peru to shoot Jeff Corwin, then there should be no reason a much more profitable show like Survivor can't do it.

durl
06-22-2004, 02:27 PM
One thing about Corwin's show is that he may only use 2-3 cameras. Survivor requires many more than that. I'm no expert but I wouldn't be surprised if they use a dozen or more cameras. Still, I wish Survivor would go HD. The scenery alone would be worth it. Although, now that I think about it, do I really want to see people in glorious HD when they haven't bathed in weeks?

Any new info on this? A web search turns up nothing and CBS will not answer any of the emails I have sent.
I really hope it happens this month, but you would figure Dave would be playing it up by now.
