I can't find too much on the 42 on-line, the only "reviews" from July and Aug of this year, so I'm thinking it's a 2003 model.
I found a 2002 review of the 46, but they said they'd had it for a year already.

46H83: http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/televisions/product.asp?model=46hx83
They're pretty similar (same CRT's), but the 46 has their SRS WOW sound found on their best models (40 watts with a sub), while the 42 has SRS 3D (30 watts with a sub).
The 42 also claims to be 720p capable, but the 46 states it can bump any signal to 1080i.
The 42 is $1500 and the 46 is $1600. Why only $100 difference for a bigger tube, seemingly better sound, and from their Cinema Series (top stuff they make)?
Any input appreciated!

Technically speaking they are identical except for size. The sound part is irrelevant if you will be using a surround receiver. Neither displays 720p they except and convert to 1080i. That feature is usefull for video games.

That has to be the most clear and concise reply I've ever seen. I really appreciate it.
Thank you another time! :D

Gnome...now for an unconcise reply
I was debating the same question 2 months ago when I bought. The 46H83 was stilll a few weeks away from hitting the streets at the time, so I bought the 42H83. Also wanted to keep the price under 2K after extended warranty. Originally bought for $1500 w/$100 gift card from BB. One week later, they dropped the 42 price down to $1225 (!), but they still mailed me gift card, so I got a steal at $1125 + $300 for warranty.
I'm happy with the 42H83. Was second guessing myself until I saw the 46H83 earlier this week at BB and the biggest difference is apperance. The 42 has a built in stand, whereas the 46 does not. To me, that makes the 42 much more affordable since the stand costs a couple hundred I think. The stand wasn't all that flattering either. I looked at a Sony 42" next to the 46H83 and the size difference seems very minimal. Picture is great on certain things (most DVD's, PS2; but just good on my digital cable, in part because I have Tivo). Also noticed at the time I bought that the 42 has a different manual then the 46/51/57/etc H83's, which all share a common manual book. Don't know what to make out of that.
My take is that you can probably get the 42 for cheaper than 1500, but if not, then if you like the looks of the 46, go for it.

Question for anyone here:
I'm interested in the 46h83 however I already have a stand that sits approximately 19" high, so if I were to set the Toshiba 46H83 on the stand it might be little high for my eyes to be in the middle of the screen. I'm guessing I'd be high by about 6-8 inches or so... My question is this:
Could I put something on the rear of the stand in the back so the TV actually leans downward slightly from the top, thus making my eyes more in the middle of the screen. Would this be bad for the TV in some way because it would not be completely flat? It would be on a flat surface - I'm thinking something like a long piece of wood so the center of the screen actually points a little downward...
Could be dangerous. The set could tip and fall flat on its face. If you have children ever come over (which most people do) I'd strongly suggest against this.
As for the harming the set, probably not.

I got the idea from a few sets at a local retail store that were placed up high and were positioned to look down on the customer...
It seems that these RPTV are extremely sensitve to vertical variations, which is why I'm a little concerned...
I guess I could just buy the stand, but then the price I actually pay goes up by a few hundred bucks, putting me in the next size category of TV's... Decisions... Decisions!!
