I don't fully understand what a receiver does, How you hook everything up, What you should run threw it. If you have digital cable should you run that to your receiver then to your TV? Does the DVD player hookup to the receiver then go to the TV? Didn't see much in the FAQs.

are you talking about an A/V Receiver that powers speakers??

if so,
basically you plug the audio outs from you DVD, Cable Box, etc to you A/V Receiver
the video outs go to the TV

so if you plug the DVD player into the A/V Receiver jack labeled DVD, you would need to put the A/V Receiver on DVD (usually will say what setting "DVD" on the front of the A/V Receiver) to hear the audio. Then the TV would have to be tuned to what ever channel/input the DVD video cable is plugged into.

Then to hear the audio from the Cable Box, you would need to put the A/V Receiver on whatever jack you put the Cable Box audio outs into, DBS for example

Normally you DO NOT run video from DVD, Cable Box etc to A/V Receiver then to the TV

You can run the video signals through the receiver if you wish. It usually depends on the quality of the receiver, the location of the equipment and your preferences regarding switching.

Many receivers do not have the capability to properly switch HD signals (wideband component switching) and therefore running the component video cables (or DVI cable for that matter) directly to the TV is recommended in those instances.

The operating manual of most receivers is usually pretty helpful with explanations and diagrams.

(I run everthing "through" my receiver because I have lots of components and I have a high quality receiver. This allows me fewer connections to the back of the TV and fewer "button presses" since I can switch an input on the receiver, without necessarily switching an input on the TV (provided they use the same type of connection).
