View Full Version : FCC Ruling on Plug and Play Mean Anything for Satellite Dish Customers?

I saw on another site where the FCC passed Plug and Play standard for cable customers getting HDTV without need for a Set Top Box (STB).
It appears TV manufacturers can make tv's that only need a card from the cable company to make it work and no need for STB.
My question is this. Is this strictly for benefit of Cable Customers? Would this eliminate need for STB for Directv and Dish customers?
It would be nice if something like that was on the horizon.

Currently the POD (Point of Deployment) cards are meant for Cable & OTA. This covers about 85% of the population.

I suppose there's no reason that eventually this could not be used for Satellite, but I'm not technical enough to know if this is possible or in the cards (pun intended.)

57U,
Thanks for insight. I do get reception with rooftop aerial too.
I plan on pulling trigger on HDTV receiver with Directv and getting Hd tv around Christmas. I just want to make sure I am not jumping the gun if there is some neat technology worth waiting for in next 6 mos.

"Winners & Losers" in the FCC decision.

I actually think the entertainment industry is also a winner. They will have far more customers this way and make more money than if they had tried to "handicap" us.
