Sony KF60DX100

Does anyone out there have first hand experience with this model? How is the LCD Picture? In this price range I would expect it to compare favorably with some of the DLP models like the Panasonic 52" DLP HDTV. I haven't seen it yet and doubt it would be side by side with a DLP TV. The price seems to be dropping rapidly...I've seen it for $4,999 already. Does anyone know what is going on with Sony's pricing on this model? Lastly, I understand that a $200 light engine component should be replaced every 2-years on this model...what's the deal with that? ....this sounds like a great TV...just wondering....what's the catch? Thanks in advance.

I purchased my Grand Wega in February during the Winter Olympics. I currently have just over 900 hours of run time, and am extremely happy with the unit.

The Grand Wega requires Gray Scale calibration out of the box (after 50 hours of burn-in). I've veiwed many units around the country and recorded the Service Mode Bias, Gain, Red, Green, Blue fixed LCD panel adjustments, and all of the units were on the high side.

Keep in mind LCD & DLP projectors cannot display a true black level. The LCD panels will always allow a small amount of light so the background is an off black. This is the one downside to the unit, but the color fidelity, no phospohor burning, no misconevergence, small foot print for a 60" (Plasma look)outweighted the black issue for me.

1080i HDNet programming is awesome on this unit.

I believe the problem with Sony sales is most stores have to many HDTVs to sell side-by-side and when the average person sees a 65" unit for $2,000 less next to a Grand Wega that's not calibrated most people will pick the larger unit.

I replaced my 195 lb Proscan 36 Hi-res Direct View CRT with the 130 lb Grand Wega on the Lovan Sovereign audio video rack without any configuration changes.

At $5000 its a great buy, and based on the tabletop footprint, the unit can always be retired to a master bedroom room when the next genertaion of flat panel screens appear.

Thanks for the Info. Currenly have a Sony 36' XBR. CRT so we both upgraded from the same type of T.V. Thats good, was kinda conserned about going to large screen rear projection and had been dissapointed with them. The oppisite happen to me while in the store all the large screens looked bad was ready to by the 40" Sony XBR and saw the Grand Vega in a seperate room, without a HDTV signal and to me It looked the best. When Sony droped the price I bought it. Who elese could make that decision but Sony. Something dosent add up. If there were a lot of them at the warehouse, put them on sale. Dosent explain why after giving up the money Still dont have mine.

I saw the KF60DX100 on display last week and was somewhat disappointed. They did not have an HD signal feed so all I could see was a DVD...and they said it wasn't Progressive scan. The Sony was set up next to a 50 inch Pioneer Elite Plasma and the difference was startling. The Plasma was so much brighter and richer. Detail was much better as well. The dealer said that the Plasma had a progressive scan DVD. When I asked why they didn't have an HD Satellite feed for the Sony...the salesperson gave me some line about "they don't want customers to see the TV with a 1080 display and then be disapponited with the unit when they get it home and only watch DVDs".

I don't know why the picture looked relatively washed out next to the Plasma. This unit had been on display since January and had run at least 12 hours a day every day. But that is only six months of heavy use. Certainly it should go at least 12 months with 12 hour days without the bulb requiring replacement already? I could also clearly tell the difference in black levels as described by mworley17.

The Plasma was at least twice as much money...but the picture quality difference has me left me disappointed and undecided with the Sony at this point.

I hope to get to ABT to see this unit with an HD Satellite feed in the next 4 to 6 weeks when I will be ready to pull the trigger on a new Big Screen. Until then...i hope folks will keep the reviews coming.

Since the Sony was fed a 480i signal, it's not a fair comparison, although it is something to keep in mind if 480i is going to be a major part of your viewing.
