LOL.......Ya I'm a newbie to HDTV

I got a Sony 36" XBR250 TV. Is this a HDTV or HDTV ready?
What is the Difference?
Do I need to Buy Something to make it HD

I currently have Directv, I know I need a HD Reciever, But Do I need Anything Else.

Also What is a Good HD Receiver?, Any Thoughts on the Sony HD 100, Besides Exspensive?

Thanks

It doesn't matter much how many lines of resolution it has (All new TV's have more than enough resolution). You'll be able to see 240 lines from a standard VCR, 400 lines from an S-VHS VCR, 400 lines from a DVD (yes typically only 400) and about 400 from an NTSC (standard TV) signal.

If you have component video in (doubtful), or S-Video in (possibly), you may get up to 480 lines, but that's definitely the max.

The reason most people think that DVD is so clear is because they've been used to seeing only 240 lines from their VCR and now they may be seeing close to twice that. Laser disk players were 400 lines.

And, NO , no matter how many lines it has (some say they have as high as 1000), it's not HDTV ready. An HDTV ready set will say so, it'll have as a minimum, a component video input with a minimum "compatibility" of 480P & 1080i.

Thanks 57U,
I'm new to all of this so I appologize for the lame Questions:)

Anyways,
Well I got component video and S-video inputs, I guess the Best thing should do is to Connect the DVD to component video and DSS reciever to the S-Video or visa vera, Does it matter, Is it noticeable?

You can connect either way and it likely won't make much difference. You'll also need to make composite or S-Video connections from the DVD to the TV because a lot of the setup menus from DVD players, do not go through the component cables - only through composite and/or S-video. Read your manual about this and other necessary setup items. If the DVD setup goes through the S-video and not the component, you may wish to make only this one connection from the DVD.

We have however, also noticed that some settop boxes send a lousy signal via component video cables when the image is not HD. Try it both ways and see.

Uh guys this might be my first post and I am a total newbie to HDTV but I know 100% for sure that all sony XBR TV's are no less than HDTV Ready. I just got the brand new fresh on the market Sony 32HV600 TV which is also HDTV Ready.

If I am not mistaken, a TV that supports 1080i is a TV that supports HD. Even if not, I know for a fact that most of the Sony Wega TV's are HDTV ready, and that the 34 inch widescreen XBR is already HD. You may still need a decoder, but it supports it.

Well, I think this is one of the earlier model WEGAs, and I can't find anything to support that this set is anything other than a flat panel analog monitor. It's not even a progressive scanning set, from everything I've been reading, let alone one that can handle anything more than 480 lines of resolution. Of course, as I mentioned, this is a discontinued set and probably the older models in the WEGA line weren't digital, just flat screen. Sorry.
