Directv Non HD looks awful! Why?

I had a DTC100 and now have a Zenith DTV1080 and, in both cases, the HD channels look great but the non-HD look awful through the composite outputs!! The picture looks like it's broken down into BIG pixels; very poor definition. The non-HD channels were fine with my previous non-HD receiver. Any ideas?

Most watch SD programs from S-Video due the same complaint as yours.
