I've narrowed my choices to these two TVs seeing that I can get a great deal on the Tosh. When it comes down to it which is a better product for you veterans of HDTV?

I also am debating between these to sets. Both can be gotten for approximately the same price, wondering if you guys have any good pros and cons for each set
Sorry to bring up a dead thread but did a search and thought it'd be easier to add to this than start a new

As someone who's spent a lifetime working inside of TV sets, this is a genuine, dyed-in-the-wool, no-brainer!
Toshiba ... hands down. I wouldn't consider for even half a second buying a Sony TV set for myself - no matter how well it performed (and they DO perform very, very well). Performance is most definitely not the end-all, be-all of TV set "worthiness" and satisfaction. Reliability and customer support (from the mfgf.) rank well above it in my estimation. Just whatinthehell good is performance on a product that's sitting in a service shop anyway?
Hope this helps those that are pondering this choice.

i will definately take your view into account, thanx
I understand your point about Toshiba being good in the long run, But I currently own 4 Sony TV's.
1 = 60 inch Grand Wega LCD
1 = 48 inch Trinatone CRT
2 = 32 inch Trinitron Direct Views
And none of them have ever seen the repair shop. The 48 inch is the oldest at 5 years now then the 32's are about 2 years old and the 60 inch is the newest, all work very well.
I would have to say go with the Sony, even though the Toshiba's are great! I personally think that picture quality is the most important aspect of buying a TV. Most electronics break down very early {usually within a few weeks}, If they make it past that point then usually you will own the product for many years to come.
just my 2 cents on this one,

IMO Toshiba is better than Sony until you get into the XBR series of Sony. At this point XBR seems to surpass Toshiba. Though, you will pay an extreme amount more for the small amount of improvement over Toshiba.

The tech that was out at my house 4 times to fix my Toshiba would disagree with you on this. It was his opinion that he not only visited more Toshiba than Sony sets, but when he needed parts replacements, Sony delivered immediately, while it took weeks sometimes to get the Toshiba parts, (this I saw firsthand). Just my experience, and his opinion from his experience though. As far as picture quality though, it's a tossup. I think the Toshiba has slightly better SD, but the Sony has much better DVD. HD seems about the same. I definitely like the Sony user level menus more though. Having direct access to 65 point convergence is a nice change over 9 point.

I just recently bought the Sony KP51WS510. I am very happy with this set. HD channels and DVD look excellent. SD cable channels look fine with the "wide zoom" stretch. May take a week or so to get used to the slight stretching. I hardly notice it anymore. I have no regrets buying this TV.
