OK---here's the deal. I have a Mits 55613 with Firewire, and a Toshiba Media Center notebook PC with Firewire. How do I record HD (which I get via Comcast STB) on to the notebook? It seems like I should be able to, but do I need HD recording software? Has anyone tried this??

The Comcast (or any cable company for that matter) STBs currently don't have firewire enabled. This may be enabled at some future time...

In future use the keyword HTPC, it may assist in your searches.

...but won't I still be getting HD out (via Firewire) of my TV? It does have a built in HD tuner, perhaps I should have mentioned that....

I've been wondering the same thing. I just bought a new computer. The old one has an 80 GB hard drive and firewire. I also have a Mitsubishi 65" with firewire. I thought I would hook them up.
Is their software that will allow HD recording to a PC???

Comcast and any other MSO has to enable Firewire as of April 1st - if you ask. I did this week, and received a spankin' new SA3250HD with Firewire enabled. I'm using my Apple PowerMac G5 to capture HDTV to an application called VirtualDVHS. See my screenie here http://www.ftmyers.com/hd.pdf (Mac's do PDF screenshots). For playback I use VLC which can play the .m2t files at their native resolution of 720p or 1080i with Dolby 5.1 sound. To get back to my TV I'm going to buy this http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/video/kdvtca3.asp

See this thread on the AVS Forums for more info http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=386740 Not sure if this helps anyone on the PC platform though. Looks like Mac's have the edge on the Firewire/STB connection at the moment...
