I am about to purchase a new home theater receiver and would like some opinions on which one to buy. I am looking in the $400-$500 range.
Also, I am thinking about mounting the rear speaker on the ceiling (easiest way for me to wire them with my setup), does anyone have an opinion on doing this?
Thanks,
There's a bit of a "checklist" for A/V Receivers in the FAQ "If only I'd have known.
You might be able to "fish" your speaker cables inside the wall or through the ceiling, depends on house construction. Looks a lot nicer than wires running up a wall.

In looking for a new A/V receiver.
I see lots of posts with suggestions of what features to look for.
What are some things/features that should be avoided when buying a new receiver?

I have had my rear speakers ceiling mounted for many years (over 10 I think) with excellent results. Just be sure to buy decent quality speakers and I think you will be very happy with the results.
Hippie, check out the FAQ "If only I'd have known". Part way down is a section on A/V receivers. hmmm, just repeated my previous post - oh well.

Thats like asking what kind of car should I buy ? .. heh Once you've decided on a coupe v station wagon v SUV etc, it's time to select a make, model and color !
I'm sure everyone here has some form of bias one way or another not being too extreme of course.
It's a "simple" case of tallying features v sound quality v size v looks v matching components v environment v personal preference v any number of other factors that will influence your choice, not the least of which of course bieng price. "Simple" enough no ? .. hmmm
Just start reading reviews, more reviews and yet more reviews, then go to eopinions.com to read a few more. Take a few afternoons off work and go to Barns & Noble, get a coffee and check out all the hi-fi hdtv magazines. Join as many forums as you can [keeping this one of course as your main source]. Visit as many retail stores as are local and become the customer from hell saying you want to listen to that, connected to these, then these and then these. Then THAT, to these and these and these. Then say you will think about it. Then buy it, take advantage of 7 day return policy no questions asked, return it and try again, again and yet again, finally deciding on the first one you picked. Now of course it is an open item and you could have got it cheaper if you had waited for the next bloke to do the same. Then you spend many hours searching the junk mail looking for deals that would have saved you more money and returning to the store to get your 110% price difference discount and using that to pay for your 5 years extended warranty.
Best of luck anyhow Hippie, one thing is however certain .. you only get what you pay for.
This is the part I find the most fun. Take a couple of months and go around to all the Audio stores and LISTEN. When I bought my Marantz It took me 6 weeks of listening to get find an amp with the sound and features I wanted in my pricerange. But it was nice listening to all the different models. One work of advice... bring your favorite music with you and try to use the same music as you audition each amp.

P.S. I am still in love with my SR7200. One of my favorite thing to do after a busy day at work is come home, put in my Blue Man Group 5.1 DVD turn it up nice and loud and shake the stuff out of the upstairs medicine cabinet. ;)

Blue Man Group..!
They Rock.. Don't care for their second album as much as the first..
The vocals kinda take away from it a bit...
Sorry.. didn't mean to get off topic.. But they do rock!
Great show if you ever get a chance to see them live!
